Opening Doors to Literacy, Part 2

This is a continuation of Opening Doors to Literacy. The project will provide fluency intervention programs and enrichment for all students in the second grade, as well as continuing to provide more high-interest books and books on tape for families. The funds will be used to purchase more read aloud books and books on tape.

Musical Chairs
Oakview. Janis Combs

This is a renewal of a 1999 grant that provided musical instruments for all K – 5th graders at Oakview Elementary. Over the past ten years these instruments have enabled students to build music literacy skills and to broaden each students musical experience. The funds will be used to purchase new instruments to replace the old worn out instruments. New this year will be a set of five geometrically shaped drums that will reinforce the math content standards involving geometry and spatial shapes.

The Building Blocks of Mathematics

This self-designed unit will be utilized every Friday during the STEM (Science Technology Math and Engineering) block, to link the Ohio standards in a unique way to encourage interest in the STEM fields. The unit involves two-parts; Algebra and Geomety, and through the use of a Hands on Equation class set, Magna Tiles, and Architecture Books combined with verbal workbooks and Engineer and Architect classroom visits from LBJ, Inc. it will inspire students and help provide them with the needed foundations in Geometry and algebra.

From Ordinary to Extraordinary – Clay Clocks

This is the second year for this grant in which students are given the opportunity to create “extraordinary clocks” out of clay. Students are shown the art of Oaxacon Indians, Aboriginal art and several modern artists. After a series of problem solving exercises each student will perfect their own design and create their clock.

Book Study… Everyone Invited

This new grant is designed to improve the literacy skills of Teresa’s fourth grade classroom through the use of book study groups, book reflection, character analysis, and much more. The funds provided are going to be used to purchase 140 new and exciting books for the classroom library.

Green Energy

The funds provided for this grant will be utilized for the purchase of a “Renewable Energy Classroom Pack”, and an Energy Conservation Kit.” Both of these kits will be used to help demonstrate Green technology concepts including Solar, Wind and Water power as well as generating and converting electrical energy.

Variety is the Spice of Literate Life

Wanna know how to get students to read more? Give them easy access to a variety of books that engage, interest, empower, surprise, inform, anger, touch, move and shcoke them. Then give them time to read! The funds provided were used to purchase a variety of high quality, high interest reading materials, with a goal to serve all students with a variety of geners, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama and graphic novels.

Reaching Readers through Recovery and Results!

The monies provided were used to purchase a new edition of the SRA’s Open Court. The Open Court system, a long time favorite of the kids, allows students to monitor their own growth, and perform at their own level. It covers all areas and generas including; Fine Arts, ESL, Test Prep, Phonics, Intervention, Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Gradual Release of Responsibility.

Indian Riffle Mail Call
Indian Riffle Elementary, Beth Frederick

This project is a postal system within the school community. Students will learn to write different types of letters, according to their grade level standards, correctly address an envelope and mail the letter to a friend, teacher or staff member within the school. There will be Indian Riffle Mailboxes created for the school, and each classroom will have an address that will be their hallway name and their room number. The students will receive two-fifteen minute blocks of time per week to write letters, which will be placed in the main mail box for collecting, sorting and finally delivery. Each week different grade levels will be responsible for the postal duties. The goal is to increase student writing for a purpose while working on friendly letters.

Classroom Jeopardy
Oakview, Kimberly Panek

This grant will enable the teacher to update the Classroom Jeopardy System. Enabling the purchase of new games that will allow the Mrs. Panek to reach more students with varying ability levelts. The technology can be utilized for chapter reviews, test preparation, unit test and Ohio Achievement Test reviews.

Connecting to the Curriculum!

The goal of this program is to integrate the science and social studies curriculum into Readers &Writers Workshop daily in the classroom. The objective is for the students to use and build prior knowledge and make deeper personal connections to the science and social studies curriculum through the use of level books during guided reading.

Introduction to Civil Engineering for Physics Students

The grant will fund the purchase of equipment that students will use to study basic civil engineering principles. The specific topics of study will include; static equilibrium, stability, I-beam design and stress-strain relationships. The students will do a series of activities such as, comparing spring constants of equal length spring, measuring the stress-strain relationships on a I-beam and more.
