School to Home with Books
Amanda Hawker - Greenmount Elementary
School to Home with Books will allow Kindergarten students the opportunity to take home a quality leveled book each week to practice literacy skills learned in school. The grant paid for the purchase of 239 individual books. review the grant application  review the interim report

Battle of the Books – 7th Grade
Elizabeth Hageman, Ryan Lamb, Matt Payne - Kettering Middle School
Battle of the Books is modeled after the very successful Battle of the Books – 8th Grade, and will provide young adult themed books for the entire 7th grade. The books will be part of the required curriculum including taking quizzes to ensure comprehension. The grant provided for the purchase of 300 books.

Books for Boys
Elizabeth Hageman - Kettering Middle School
The Grant provides for the purchase of 59 high interest books that are specifically targeted to reluctant boy readers. These books have strong characters, fast-moving plots, and are centered around themes that interest many boys.

Getting Guys to Read
Melissa Gallagher, Linda Evans - Orchard Park Elementary
The U.S. Department of Education reading test scores for the last thirty years show boys scoring lower than girls in every reading age group. The Getting Guys to Read project is designed to provide 4th grade boys with books and magazines that appeal to boys. In addition the classes will have male guests (Local sports and new personalities as well as fathers and grandfathers) in their classrooms on a monthly basis to talk about reading in their profession. review the grant application

Wonderful World of Words
Joey Nels - Oakview
The Words their Way program teaches kids how words work in a systematic and effective way. It teaches children to look closely at words to discover vowel patterns, syllable structures, and spelling-meaning connections. The students will participate in daily word study activates and will be assessed every 4 weeks in order to monitor process.

Family Library
Christine Murray - Moraine Meadows
Many of the students in the KIDS Club Program at Moraine Meadows do not have books at home, and do not see a book other then during school hours, thus creating very “at risk” readers. The purpose of this grant is to put real hardcover books in the hands of children who are in need of additional intervention with their literacy skills.

Nonfiction Literature Circles
Jessica Stickel, Sherri Alexander, Carrie Hennessy - Fairmont High School
Nonfiction Literature Circles is designed to provide more opportunities to expose the 9th grade class to the non-fiction genera. For Three weeks, students will meet twice a week in their “book clubs” to respond to their reading and participate in guided activities, that correlate with the Ohio Academic Content Standards for ninth grade.

Nonfiction for Interest, for Life
Tanya Wells - Van Buren Middle School
Because of No Child Left Behind, it is imperative that all children are able to read and read well. Skills in reading are necessary throughout life, not just to pass the test or meet standards. However, getting students interested in reading can be difficult task. This project would utilize nonfiction books to teach the reading skills necessary to pass the test, pass the class and feel the success of becoming a strong reader. The funds were used to purchase 30 new nonfiction books.

Learning for all Lending Library
Heather Fawley - KMS
Teachers will be provided with Parallel curriculum materials to help them meet the needs of lower-level readers. Resource materials will help teachers develop differentiated lessons, allowing for both gifted and handicapped students to have their needs met in the general classroom.

Soaring through Summer Reading at VBMS

Funds were used to purchase materials to continue a summer reading program, including journals and books.

Wild Over Writing (WOW)
Melissa Gallagher & Linda Evans - Orchard Park
The funds were used to purchase high-quality children’s literature. Which will help provide examples of good writing and enhance student publishing of their independent work.

Books Aplenty Books Galore
Kimberly Ulrich - Orchard Park
Funds purchased guided leveled books, six in each level, for the bookroom that can be taken home for reading fluency practice and teach vocabulary, decoding, fluency and comprehension skills.

Technology

Snapshot in Learning
Angie Homan - John F. Kennedy Elementary
Snapshot in Learning provided for the purchase of a document camera that will integrate with the existing Smart Board to further help kids become visual learners, as well as increasing their technology skills. The camera will easily display documents, magazines, photo’s etc.. as well as producing magnified images of smaller items. review the grant application

Picture Perfect Project
Debi Everett - Southdale, Moraine Meadows, Beavertown
The Picture Perfect Project is a way for students to learn valuable technical skills as well as the content standards in life science. The grant provides for the purchase of 5 digital cameras and a webcam to supplement the standard unit on plants and ecosystems. The students will use the cameras to document changes in ecosystems, and long term projects like plant growth. review the grant application

Magnifying Our Smart Board
Marilyn Dickey, Linda Rudd - John F. Kennedy Elementary
Magnifying Our Smart Board provided for the purchase of a document camera that will integrate with the existing Smart Board to further help kids become visual learners, as well as increasing their technology skills. Science

Guided Inquiry Project for Topic of Earth and the Solar System
Douglas Callinan - Van Buren Middle School
Guided inquiry is a discovery based type of learning where students work in small groups to discover information while encouraging higher level thinking. Students will study the following: Earth’s Rotation, The causes of seasons, issues on space travel, movement of the moon, and much more. The grant funds provide for the purchase of the Mega Module with enough materials for 40 class periods of lessons. review the grant application

Science Essentials
Pamela Bauser - Moraine Meadows
The grant funds will help with the purchase of durable science equipment for teacher demonstrations and student use to replace and update old and missing equipment.

Keeping an Eye on Optics
Chad Runyon, Jeffery McManus - FHS
The grant will purchase a ray optics, laser system used to teach real-world applications of geometric optics, Demonstrations will be possible on the inner workings of the human eye, the function of eyeglasses, how telescopes and cameras work, refraction and reflection of light.

Gateway to Gardening
Linda Rudd & Marilyn Dickey - JFK
The grant helped purchase a portable indoor greenhouse used to grow plants in the classroom. Plants and flowers frown there were presented to local nursing homes, neighborhood parks, the school or nearby residents.

Social Studies

Got Pelt
Fred Kleinhenz  - Orchard Park
The purchase of animal pelts and other materials to assist fifth-grade social studies students in the understanding of early Colonial explorations.

Fitness

Encompassing Fitness
Kara Hicks - J.E. Prass
The purpose of this project is to teach the sport of Orienteering to third, fourth and fifth graders in physical education class. The students will use a map and compass to find certain marks on a controlled course. Orienteering aligns with the NASPE (National Association of Sport and Physical Education) standards for Physical Education as well as covers the Ohio Department of Education benchmarks for geography. The funds will be used to purchase 2 – 12 count orienteering sets. review the grant application

Math

Visualizing the Mechanical Universe
Jeff McManus, Chad Runyon - Fairmont High School
Physics students describe one of the most difficult challenges is to visualize the invisible. Many topics studied in physics have been taught relying on diagrams in text or crude animations on the web. The grant funds will be used to purchase the series The Mechanical Universe. The series uses ground breaking computer animation that shows exactly those concepts that are most challenging to understand.

Physics is a Blast!
Melanie Byers - Kettering Middle School
Through the purchase of solid fuel rocket packs the students will get the opportunity to learn about frame of reference, kinetic and potential energy, energy conservation and more physical science standards, while building their own rockets. The higher level students will be able to experiment with fin shape and size while making and comparing velocity calculations.

TEAMS through Play (Teaching and Enriching Achievement in Math and Science)
Heather McClintick - Southdale
The funds were used to help integrate math and science games and activities in the classroom.

Exploring Math with Hands and Minds
MaryEllen Sage - Oakview
The funds purchased math puzzles, brainteasers and exploration activities to help second-grade math students with basic skills as well as introducing them to higher level skills such as prediction, inference and classification

Art

From Ordinary to Extraordinary-Clay
Nancy Schulte - Kettering Fairmont High School
Students will be given the opportunity to create “extraordinary Clocks” out of clay. Students will be shown the art of Oaxacon Indians, Aboriginal art and several modern artists. After a series of problem solving exercises each student will perfect their own design and create their clock. The funds will be utilized to purchase, clock movements, clay and various glazes.
