Fostering the Love of Reading through Kindergarten Take-Home Books

The goal of this project is to send kindergarten students home with leveled books, accompanied with an activity to reinforce literacy concepts. This will also make reading fun and provide a stronger family-school partnership. The funds provided for the purchase of Leveled Books, Take home bags and activities.

The grant funds will be used to purchase a wide variety of leveled reading material for the first grade classroom. This will enable the students to have 4-5 books in a reading bag and then exchange them for new titles on a weekly basis.
Making the Abstract Concrete – Hands-on equations in Algebra, Grades 3 - 5

In this project all mathematics teachers in Grades 3-5 (Five teachers for approximately 240 students) would receive the “Hands-On Equations” Smart Board program, as well as a class kit of manipulatives to further student learning and comprehension of abstract algebraic principles.
Continuing to Build the Blocks of Mathematics Using Literature

This renewal grant incorporates reading and writing to better teach the principals of Math. The unit will involve two parts: Part one will involve cooperative learning groups exploring geometry topics, and a class novel project exploring the standards of economics and money. Part two is a six week cross curriculum unit based on the novel, Lemonade Wars, by Jackie Davies. The grant will allow for the purchase of required books to complete the course of study.
Fundations: Building a Foundation for Lifelong Reading

The goal of the Fundations reading program is to provide a multi-sensory systematic, sequential approach to teaching beginning reading skills. Fundations is a research based program that has been adapted from the Wilson Reading System. The program assists in the building of phonemic awareness. The grant monies were utilized for the purchase of the Fundations program.
Reading is Learning: Library Books in Foreign Languages

Fairmont High School recently became an International Baccalaureate (IB) School. Students who are enrolled in the IB Diploma Program must take four years of a second language and be tested on the efficiency and fluency of this language. Currently the resources in Fairmont High School are limited for second language readers. Therefore the funds are being used to purchase books in other languages for the newly renovated library.

According to recent research boys trail girls in reading. What is the solution to this? One of them is to provide boys access to reading materials they want to read. The monies were used to purchase high-interest by friendly material.
Building Foundations with Books II

Building Foundations with Books II will continue to give kindergarten students access to leveled books three times a week through our home reading program. The student will be able to choose a leveled book to take home and read with a family member. The next day at school they will get to reread the book with a teacher or parent volunteer. The money provided will be utilized for the purchase of more leveled books.
STEM with Elementary Engineers

The STEM with Elementary Engineers grant will enrich physical science concepts in the elementary gifted program through different technology and engineering activities. The funds will support different units for grades 3 – 5 in the one day a week gifted program. The program will allow the students to build and test bridges, towers, boats, kites, toy cars as well as using robotics. The funds from the grant will purchase teacher guides to facilitate the activities.
Community Improvement with Construction Trades

The Fairmont Construction Trades program has gone Mobile! With the donation of a trailer from the Kettering Jaycees program, the students of Fairmont High School’s Construction Trades program will have the opportunity to work throughout the community helping support such projects as Habitat for Humanity, and working with the City of Kettering in helping neighbors in need with construction jobs. Thus giving the students hands on practice in the construction trade industry while also performing community service. The funds provided will be used to purchase construction grade tools to fill the trailer.
M3: Making Math Meaningful

The M#: Making Math Meaningful grant will provide math resources to supplement interventions Oakview teachers use to help students learn math. The grant targets three specific areas of intervention, number sense, logic, and problem solving. The grant funds will purchase math games such as those available through the Math Pentathlon program as well as other teacher resources.

Math for Mondays is a project intended to provide hands-on activities for fourth graders in math. The goal is to get students more actively engaged in math by using materials beyond paper and pencil. Through math games and other classroom aids the students will be more engaged in math which should lead to higher achievement in math and more confidence in the subject.

Ready, set GROW supports the collaborative effort of the early childhood staff to address the diverse needs of our young learners through intentional instruction in all settings. It is the goal of the program to have all kindergarten children meeting the necessary benchmarks to be successful in first grade. This will be accomplished through the Worktime in Kindergarten Differentiated Independent Practice Kit, which provides resources to support the problem solving and exploration necessary to acquire the essential learning strategies
